Numerical models of convection in a rheologically stratified oceanic upper mantle: Early results

چکیده

Recent seismological evidences imply that the boundary between the lithosphere and asthenosphere is a compositional boundary in the oceanic upper mantle, and a rapid increase of viscosity at this boundary is suggested. We modeled a thermal convection in the oceanic mantle numerically using the finite element method, and investigated geodynamical consequences of such a rheological layering. Early results from both quasi-steady state flows and time-dependent flows are presented in this report. We assumed a temperatureand depth-dependent viscosity law so that both the thermal effects and those of layering are taken into account. The effect of a high-viscosity layer (HVL) is small on the flow and the temperature field. Velocity gradients in the HVL are small in both directions, and the velocity field is well approximated by a one-dimensional channel flow. The HVL acts as a low-pass filter of the dynamic topography.

Degree-1 mantle convection and the crustal dichotomy on Mars

The surface of Mars consists of an old, heavily cratered and elevated southern hemisphere and younger, resurfaced and depressed northern hemisphere, a feature often termed the crustal dichotomy. The global crustal structure [Zuber et al., 2000] revealed by topography and gravity data from the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft, and the possible late formation of the boundary zone between the hemis...

Edge-modulated stagnant-lid convection and volcanic passive margins

[1] The initial oceanic crust along volcanic passive margins is a factor of 3 greater than that of typical oceanic crust (20 versus 6–7 km). Convection driven by the edge of the continental lithosphere may cause mantle material to circulate through the shallow zone of significant melting beneath the nascent ocean basin and cause the volume of melted mantle to exceed that required to replace the...

Top driven asymmetric mantle convection

The role of decoupling in the low-velocity zone is crucial for understanding plate tectonics and mantle convection. Mantle convection models fail to integrate plate kinematics and thermodynamics of the mantle. In a first gross estimate, we computed at about 306 km/yr the volume of the plates lost along subduction zones. Mass balance predicts that slabs are compensated by broad passive upwelling...

Low-degree mantle convection with strongly temperature- and depth-dependent viscosity in a three-dimensional spherical shell

A series of numerical simulations of thermal convection of Boussinesq fluid with infinite Prandtl number, with Rayleigh number 10, and with the strongly temperatureand depthdependent viscosity in a three-dimensional spherical shell is carried out to study the mantle convection of singleplate terrestrial planets like Venus or Mars without an Earth-like plate tectonics. The strongly temperature-d...
